Brahma Kumaris Hotel Mount Abu

The Brahma Kumaris are the followers of the spiritual principles initiated by its founder, Baba Lekhraj.

Initially known as ‘Om Mandali’, its members are primarily from the region of Hyderabad in Sindh (now in Pakistan).

The community is now known as the Brahma Kumaris world spiritual university and is based in Mt. Abu in Rajasthan.

Basically a non-religious foundation, the organisation believes in the inherent goodness of the soul and helps its devotees to understand their inner strengths and values.

However several devotees also believe that their spiritual leader, Baba Lekhraj was a spiritual manifestation of the Hindu God Lord Shiva.

Most meditation centres and similar spiritual and ‘non religious’ communities have similar belief systems and principles with minor differences.

The Brahma Kumaris believe in the existence of negative energy and how they can hamper spiritual growth of the being.

Realizing the overwhelmingly spiritual downslide of mankind with industrialization, urbanization and more specifically, globalisation Brahma Kumaris have taken several initiatives like

counselling inmates and staff at several detention centres, spreading messages of faith, understanding and respect among different communities and religious groups

while believing in the existence of a common spiritual trait in all human beings.

The Brahma Kumaris strive to spread peace and non-violence through their efforts.

Criticism
The Brahma Kumaris world spiritual university has been in existence for almost 8 decades however its existence has not been smooth since its inception.

Several ex- members have highlighted several aspects of the community, which are at best controversial if not out rightly wrong.

Sex for example is considered wrong and a corrupting influence for the soul and hence members are expected to be celibate.

There are others who complain that although it introduces itself as a non-religious spiritual society; religion inevitably seeps into their thoughts and didactic teachings that almost borders with autocracy.

Antithetic to improvement in women’s position in the society is yet another blot in the principalities of the Brahma Kumaris. However all said and done, it cannot be overlooked that very few organizations have stirred so much debate and transformation as the Brahma Kumaris and in spite of many fold expansions have stuck to their original principles which were overtly simple and yet profound.
